The first song on the list takes us into the top 5. There have been a hefty dose of great albums this year, Tyler The Creator, Bon Iver, The Decemberists to name a few, but none of them wrote this song.
5. The Copper Top by Bill Wells & Aiden Moffat.
From the album, ‘Everything’s Getting Older’, The Copper Top is a beautiful spoken word track. To be fair, the entire album could make it on this list but The Copper Top is so heartbreaking and brilliant that it deserves a spot all to itself.
The video itself is worth a watch too, concerning the day in the life of a funeral directors. The story tells of a guy in a bar, drinking. He’s come from a funeral, avoided the wake though. I won’t say much, as it’s a short song and a very short spoken word piece. But I’ll leave you with a video, and the haunting voice of Aiden Moffat, and my favourite lyric of the year,
“Birth, love and death: the only reasons to get dressed up. I loosen my tie.”
